Once again Alex was here to remind us of our frail humanity. On a beautiful hike up the the Wind Canyon in the North Dakota Badlands on Roosevelt National Park we were warned of rattlesnakes. Alex, in typical fashion, panicked. He can be quoted saying,
"Okay we saw it lets go."
"I don't want to walk any more."
and my personal favorite, "We're all gonna die!"
I'm so glad we have people like Alex to remind us of our ever-present mortality.
Now let's talk about dirt. Over our long trip, the van has accumulated a large amount of dust, dirt, and mud. First there's De Smet dirt from the very first rainstorm and the wind that kicked up some mud. Then we have a fine layer of Custer State Park. On top of that, there is Yellowstone dust and an ungodly amount of tree pollen, also from Yellowstone. There's a little Teton air stuck to the car body, but the most significant dust is that from Montana and the long dirt road taken up to the cabin. Sprinkle a little North Dakota Badlands on there and you have a blue van that's going tan.
We spent the majority of the day getting to Bismarck, North Dakota. Consequently, I've had the old folk song on replay in my head, "we've got to sink the Bismarck, we've gotta shut her down." Also, isn't Bismarck a type of donut...?
